What I look for in a Television

Dynamics. That might sound like a bad US basketball team name but they’re the most fundamental constituent of a quality audio-video experience. They’re the volume gap between the explosions and the whispers in a soundtrack, the contrast between inky blacks and stark whites on screen. They’re the essence of drama and the difference between an immersive cinematic experience and a totally “meh” one. That’s why any TV I’d consider has to get them bang-on. Other stuff matters too – detail, smooth motion, vibrant colours – but most of that is tied up in getting dynamics and contrast right in the first place. Real-life televisual bliss is less subtle and idealised. Daily success comes from design and practicality: being able easily to mount it beyond the reach of sticky infant clutches, being happy that the look works with our G-Plan-ish furniture (partly for my own peace of mind, mostly for my partner’s) and not having to fire up numerous boxes just to hear what’s happening.

My Moment…

My perfect TV moment is being able to see exactly what’s going on in Wall-E’s murkier scenes, and being dazzled by the day-glo colours when the titular robot first makes it to the Axiom’s human highway, with my son sat next to me on the
sofa and sunshine streaming in
through the window. If he’s
happily entranced, you can 
be sure I will be too.
